Descripción:
The prime objective of the book is to: (i) provide an up-to-date audit of the butterfly species on British and Irish offshore islands, the last audit being 20 years ago (data unavailable in butterfly atlases); (ii) a full easily digestible account of biogeographical and ecological processes underlying species’ richness, species’ incidences and species’ turnover on the islands. Emphasis is placed on investigating the dynamism of British island biogeography and the degree of dependency of island species’ banks on mainland sources, especially on the mass of individuals in populations acting as sources on mainland shores. This feature is emerging as a critical issue for conserving butterflies on the islands. The book will examine the developments in island biogeography, particularly the factors affecting migration and colonisation of species, and evolutionary processes in deep (geological) and shallow (ecological) history. It is an entirely new edition of Dennis & Shreeve (1996) with a change in title reflecting on completely new content and novel approaches in the chapters and material available in the appendices. The latter provide a database of records for >390 islands of > 900 examined: compared to 1996 this includes records for an additional 177 islands and 1602 new records of species on islands. In this book, a greater emphasis is put on placing butterfly biogeography on the small offshore islands in the context of patterns and processes on the British and Irish mainlands and on the continent of Europe. The work is geared to a wider readership than in the previous study of 1996 with an extensive glossary to help readership.
